Yes, log homes are energy efficient. The Coventry Log Home is 5 star, energy star rated. They are a solid mass wall unit which is rated as a U factor not an R factor like conventional stud framed walls. If the customer is concerned with having a more energy efficient wall with a larger U factor, they can increase to an 8 inch log wall. In our climate here in Arizona a high quality 6 inch log is sufficient. Also, all of our homes have quality Anderson dual pane wood framed windows, tank less hot water heater, 92% efficiency heaters, Lennox wood or pellet stoves and three levels of insulation packages offered for floor, ceilings and interior walls.
Yes, but if you understand the value in preventative maintenance and scheduled upkeep in a conventional or log home, a log is not hard to keep in top condition compared to stucco or wood sided homes. All of the exposed fascia and eave areas are the same as a conventional home. Any logs or wooden decks in high exposure areas need regular maintenance to keep them in top condition. Stains, caulking and chinking have improved immensely over the past ent years. If you you use a quality product, you can expect a longer life with easy upkeep.
Yes. All fireplaces and wood burning stoves have minimum stand off or inches required to be away from combustible material. There is no difference between a log home or a conventional home when installing a fireplace.
No. Log homes go through a traditional permit process with your local building department. In some counties or states, you are required to have a structural engineer review the plans and certify them to that specific area.
Yes. Log homes meet the new energy star requirements and are very comfortable homes to live in using a renewable product which is easily attainable and stable for the environment.
A log home is covered by the same warranty as a conventional home, which in Arizona is a 2 year builder's warranty. In addition, a log home is also covered by a limited lifetime warranty on the logs themselves if purchased from Coventry Log Homes.
No the logs are not treated. The logs are engineered and kiln dried to a minimum of 19% moisture content. After the installation of the logs, the exterior of the logs are treated with a stain which contains a UV inhibitor, pesticide and antifungal and mold agent to increase the life of your logs and protect the exterior.
The build time depends on the size of the home and type of logs used. An engineered home with 6 or 8 inch logs takes the same amount of time to build as a conventional home. For example an 1800 square foot log home would take approximately 3-4 months from start of constructions.
